Steel

China gāng
Japan hagane
Steel Vertical Wall Scroll

鋼 is the Chinese character and Japanese Kanji for steel (as in iron mixed with carbon and other elements to make it stronger).

This can also be the name Hagane in Japanese. Like Mr. Steel in English. It can also be pronounced as Tsuyoshi or Kou when used as personal or given names in Japan.

The Warrior’s Word, Dependable as Gold and Steel

Japan bushi no ichigon kintetsu no gotoshi
The Warrior’s Word, Dependable as Gold and Steel Vertical Wall Scroll

武士の一言金鉄の如し is an old Japanese proverb about the value of the word of a warrior.

Here's a couple versions of how this can be translated:

A warrior's single word is as unchanging and reliable as gold and steel.
A warrior's promise is as dependable as gold, and his [scabbard contains] untarnished steel (a sword).

Note: Sometimes this phrase is written as 男子の一言、金鉄の如し (danshi no ichigon kintetsu no gotoshi)

Note: Because this selection contains some special Japanese Hiragana characters, it should be written by a Japanese calligrapher.

Tempering Makes Strong Steel

Hardship Develops Strong Character
China bǎi liàn cái chéng gāng
Tempering Makes Strong Steel Vertical Wall Scroll

This literally translates as: Only after much tempering is steel produced.

Figuratively, this means: True character must be tested in hardship.

This is a mild form of saying, "Whatever doesn't kill me, makes me stronger."

Discipline / Training / Tempering Character

China mó liàn
Discipline / Training / Tempering Character Vertical Wall Scroll

This is a form of discipline which suggests training of the mind and character, aimed at producing self-control, obedience, etc.

One of my Chinese-English dictionaries even translates this as "tempering oneself" or turning yourself into hardened steel.

In old Korean Hanja, they use these characters in reverse order but with the same meaning. If you want the Korean version, please click this link instead of the button above: Korean version.

Iron Heart

China tiě xīn
Japan tetsu kokoro / tesshin
Iron Heart Vertical Wall Scroll

This can be translated as "iron heart," "steel core," "iron mind" in Chinese and Japanese Kanji.

鐵心 is not a common term, but I added it here since so many were looking for "iron heart." 鐵心 is almost like saying you are without emotions or feeling - a very stoic person. 鐵心 is not a Buddhist trait.

Armor

China kǎi
Japan yoroi
Armor Vertical Wall Scroll

Armor 鎧 is a simple way to write armor or armour in Chinese, Japanese Kanji, and old Korean Hanja.

This can also be Yoroi (a Japanese place-name). It can also refer to mail as in chain mail.

All of our calligraphy wall scrolls are handmade.

When the calligrapher finishes creating your artwork, it is taken to my art mounting workshop in Beijing where a wall scroll is made by hand from a combination of silk, rice paper, and wood.
After we create your wall scroll, it takes at least two weeks for air mail delivery from Beijing to you.

Allow a few weeks for delivery. Rush service speeds it up by a week or two for $10!

When you select your calligraphy, you'll be taken to another page where you can choose various custom options.

A nice Chinese calligraphy wall scroll

The wall scroll that Sandy is holding in this picture is a "large size"
single-character wall scroll.
We also offer custom wall scrolls in small, medium, and an even-larger jumbo size.

A professional Chinese Calligrapher

Professional calligraphers are getting to be hard to find these days.
Instead of drawing characters by hand, the new generation in China merely type roman letters into their computer keyboards and pick the character that they want from a list that pops up.

There is some fear that true Chinese calligraphy may become a lost art in the coming years. Many art institutes in China are now promoting calligraphy programs in hopes of keeping this unique form of art alive.

Trying to learn Chinese calligrapher - a futile effort

Even with the teachings of a top-ranked calligrapher in China, my calligraphy will never be good enough to sell. I will leave that to the experts.

A high-ranked Chinese master calligrapher that I met in Zhongwei

The same calligrapher who gave me those lessons also attracted a crowd of thousands and a TV crew as he created characters over 6-feet high. He happens to be ranked as one of the top 100 calligraphers in all of China. He is also one of very few that would actually attempt such a feat.
